tulip lamp

chris designed this lamp nearly two years ago and
it has consistently been one of our most requested
items.

marin magazine featured us in their march issue and
highlight this particular lamp as an example of our work
from an eco-friendly perspective.  it is made from
reclaimed mahogany, repurposed acrylics and is always
made custom to order.

you can check out the marin magazine mention here.

new floor and the such

we put the finishing coat on chris' floor today and are
completely excited about the way it turned out.  it is
created entirely from wood scraps we've saved over the
years that most people would not consider usable.  birch,
walnut, cherry, oak...i think we may have even grabbed
a few scraps from woodworker friends we've used for
fabrication and the such...

our good friend nick bauman, from minneapolis, is out
visiting for a long weekend and came by the studio today.
good discussions about cradle to cradle considerations
among many other subjects.  here we're looking over the
prototype for an unbelievably awesome new side table.
nick has always been an impressive conversationalist and
hasn't lost ANY of his touch.  someday he may even find
a sense of humor.  good luck, nick.

table for twelve

we built this dining set from reclaimed douglas fir
floor joists from chris' great grandparent's house built
in 1905.  pulling all the nails from this wood was a blast!
thanks to coley for all his persistence with a flat bar
and hammer in the summer heat last year.  well done,
sir.

customized for the decarli house, this piece is currently
featured on furnitureseen.  thanks to susan and anita
for the post.  they really know how to pick the most
excellent work by really awesome designers like us.

we are so old school when it comes to this.  we've been
building from reclaimed lumber for several years now.
we scout around for whatever we can find, wherever
that may be.  we just came across 800 board feet of
redwood decking from the late 1960's that is absolutely
beautiful.  our first commission with this wood should
be finished by late march.

bakers pride

our new space is filled with not only natural light, but
with the aroma of the tomales bakery.  it's slightly
strange, but also welcoming, to experience such a
distinctly comforting smell not usually associated
with a fabrication studio.

we began laying the floor in chris' office yesterday and
will complete it today.  we are using ALL reclaimed wood
we've been storing for nearly two years.  i knew we'd
find a use for it at some point and it feels great not
to have to move it around our shop space anymore.

photos with ellen

our friend, photographer ellen shershow pena
, used
the form3-designed decarli house in petaluma as a
backdrop for a photo shoot yesterday.  the shoot
included cupcakes like i've never seen before in my
life. (they also tasted pretty amazing.)

it's always great to see her. she had us cracking up.

this is ellen taking an important call as she heads
back to the city in her cityshare car. she uses a very
stylish jill-e camera bag. yes, that's a camera bag.

nea artworks competition

the national endowments for the arts is holding
an open competition for a new graphic identity
for the program artworks.  it is open to anyone
with an idea and the ability to convey that idea
graphically.  it's that simple.  no cost for entry.
the deadline is march 5th.

since we help our business clients with branding
strategies on a regular basis, we've been working
out a few ideas for the competition ourselves.

meeting with keith

my partner, chris, had a meeting yesterday
with one of our favorite clients of all time, pro
skateboarder and entrepreneur, keith hufnagel
to discuss some design work on his home in
marin county.

it reminded me of these side tables we did
exclusively for him at the end of last year.
they are not on our website yet, but will be
in the near future with our 2010 plyform series.
(we use google's sketch up for a lot of simple
work, as shown in the modeling above.)

two-tone side table

we've been working on versions of this side table for a
couple months now and here it is:  our new two-tone
side table.  it comes in a variety of custom colors and
ALWAYS uses reclaimed wood.  this version is shown
in cream with reclaimed douglas fir legs and drawer.

our selected work is now available online at the marin store.

new plyform angle

this is the new prototype for a chair we've been working on.
a few kinks to still work out, but we've already sold the
prototype to the clothing designer suzi johnson in portland.
you can check out her work at www.souchi.com

dwell magazine (www.dwell.com) gave us a nice post last
month on our plyform stack lounge chair.  you can check it
out at dwell online.

form3 in tomales

the beginning of a new beginning.  we are now moved in to our space in tomales, ca (population 210).  a few finishing touches ahead, but we are looking forward to our first project beginning this week:  Benny Gold's (www.bennygold.com) new store in the mission district, San Francisco.

working from a downtown Los Angeles warehouse only a short nine years ago, this seems a bit isolated, but the charm is unbelievable.  the building we now occupy is an old military barracks moved from the presidio of san francisco some seven decades ago.
the aroma from our neighbors (the awesome tomales bakery) provides a welcome touch and we look forward to being part of this cool little community.
